Chinese Culture Week

The Chinese department held a Chinese Culture Week from 12th to 15thFebruary with the aim to celebrate the Chinese New Year and provide an authentic learning environment for learning Chinese.  A great variety of activities were organized throughout the week as follows:

 

Auspicious messages in red packets on 12th Feb

 

Students were invited to write an auspicious message on a piece of red paper and put it into a big red packet for exchange. It helped students learn the meaningful act of sending and receiving red packets.

 

Traditional food tasting and saying a blessing on 13th Feb

 

Different delicious traditional food and snacks for Chinese New Year were offered for tasting. Students enjoyed the delicacies and at the same time learnt to greet one another with propitious expressions in Chinese.

 

Lion dance and traditional Chinese cosplay parade on 14th Feb

 

Students put on costumes from different dynasties and had a parade around the school with Lion Dance performance.  Festive atmosphere filled the campus.

 

Receiving the God of Wealth and Lion Dance blessing on 15th Feb

 

Students greeted the God of Wealth with auspicious expressions in Chinese at the main gate and received gold coins (chocolate) in return as blessings.  Lion Dance team visited each classroom, bringing blessings to all the teachers and students. It is a tradition to spread wealth and fortune.

 

During the week, students actively participated in “Huichun”(挥春)writing, Dragon decoration and Papercutting (剪纸) in their lessons with great fun and enjoyment. They also learnt auspicious expressions in Chinese to say blessings over others.  It was a very good opportunity for students to have a better understanding about the Chinese culture and celebrate the Chinse New Year in school.
