Science Week

The Science Week was held from 7th to 11th May this year. During the Science Week, various science activities and experiments were organized during lunch time. Same as every year, we aim to arouse interest and provide a fun environment to learning Science outside the classroom.

Here is what we did during the week:

Integrated Science Activity: Water Rocket competition

Form 2 integrated science students designed water rockets based on their knowledge and understanding about forces and aerodynamics. Students showed great enthusiasm in the preparation work and design of their water rockets. During lunch time, the best performing teams from each class brought their refined water rocket for the final competition. The distance travelled by each rocket was measured and awards were presented to students as follows:

  • Most Powerful Water  Rocket Award (distance travelled: 32M):  SANTOS Zaine Matthew Lustre, DAYRIT Alexander Miguel Q., ISHIBASHI Bayanin Riki and TAN Xi Sheng Anselm (2C)
  • Best Designed Water Rocket Award (distance travelled: 18M): LEUNG Ching Fung Henry and LAU Ho Fai Hiroki (2M)

Physics Activities

Two interesting activities were introduced by the Physics department this year – the Pasta Challenge and the Makey Makey. For Pasta Challenge, students had to use their creativity to lift up heavy loads with fragile pasta given. To our surprise, lots of students could come up with a lot of brilliant and innovative work to achieve the goal.

For Makey Makey, STEM technologies like MicoBit and MacBook were used to guide students how to play “piano” with a piece of paper. Students all enjoyed the activities tremendously!

Chemistry Activities

Two fascinating activities namely “Hot Ice Growing” and the “Gas Bomb Gun” were introduced to students. The “Hot Ice Growing” activity required students to be very focused and careful so as to grow a hot ice tower with stunning height. Throughout the activities, students were all engaged and they demonstrated their great interest and curiosity in learning Chemistry knowledge too. Some students even attempted to find out the mechanism of how hot ice works from the Internet instantly during the activities.

Biology Activities

On 8th May, a series of Biology activities were organized to arouse students’ interest in learning Biology, including Observation of scorpion babies, Microscopic observation of Nematodes, Yeast Air Balloons and Fruit Battery. Students took the opportunities to get a closer look of the scorpions, a group joint-legged invertebrates classified under Class Arachnids (Spider-like animals), which is characterized by possession of eight jointed legs. In addition, Students were amazed by the existence of the moving Nematodes (C.elegans) under the microscopes, a popular animal model used in Developmental Biology Research. After a series of animal observation, some students were engaged in generating electricity with different kinds of fruits while some others were figuring out the respiration reaction behind the Yeast Air Balloons.

Teacher Sharing:

On 11thMay during lunch time, Mr. Doulos Tam and Mr. Curtis Lam both shared with the students on their journey of studying Science and how their career paths have been developed all the way from their childhood. They also shared the difficult time that they experienced during studying and how they overcame it eventually. Not only did the presentation bring out the importance of growth mindset, it further reinforced and echoed with some School dispositions that students were expected to acquire, for instance, curiosity, perseverance and resilience.

The presentation was a great success that it drew a full house attendance in the classroom. . Students were all felt touched and greatly inspired by their teachers.

All in all, through the Science Week, students were introduced various elements of STEM and experienced a lot of joy through learning Science outside the classroom. More of these kinds of activities will be organized to cultivate students’ interest and passion in learning Science.
