Chinese Culture Week

The Chinese Culture Week was held from 18th to 22nd March this year. The Chinese Department organised different activities during the week to enhance learning effectiveness towards the subject through a whole-school approach.

“Discover Hong Kong like a Local”(港式生活) was set as the theme to foster experiential learning through  a series of interactive activities and food tasting to explore the local culture. To put leverage on the learning experience “My hobby” in Form One and “Facilities in the community” in Form 2, students studying elementary Chinese engaged in different games like Chinese Checkers, Word Cards, Hopscotch and Sandbags during lesson time to get a better understanding about the childhood games in Hong Kong. For Form 3 students, exploring the learning unit “Living in Hong Kong”, they visited a food museum in Sha Tin to gain an idea of popular Hong Kong street food. Moreover, they also participated in  a food tasting competition with  Hong Kong traditional snacks and street food.

A “Local Hawker Stall Competition” was held at lunchtime during one day of the week to recall the old Hong Kong collective memory. Childhood Interactive Games were set for students and free food coupons, designed as old MTR tickets, were granted to students who had joined the games. The food coupons would be used to redeem food at the stalls which were managed by Form 2 and 3 students studying local Chinese. They dressed and acted like hawkers. Mandarin was used as the language of communication to apply what they had learnt outside the classroom. It was a fabulous afternoon with a combination of learning and great fun.

Through the Chinese Culture week, students were able to have a better understanding of the Chinese Culture through authentic, experiential learning.
