Back to School Nights (15 Sept and 21 Sept)

This year, the Back to School Nights were held on Thursday evening, 15 September, for Forms 1-3 parents and on Wednesday evening the following week for Forms 4-7 parents.  Altogether around 430 parents came to meet with teachers about their children’s learning at school.

Parents arrived at school at about 6:00pm, and the evening started at 6:30pm beginning with an address by Dr. Miller.  Dr. Miller talked to parents about the school’s emphasis on student achievement and parent-school cooperation.  Forms 1 and 2 parents were then introduced programmes of the Life Wide Learning Camps from the organizers.  A questionnaire about the school was filled in by parents.

The main part of the evening started at 7:10pm with teachers meeting parents in different classrooms for subjects such as English, Mathematics, Chinese, French, Sciences, History, Geography, Economics, Business Studies, etc.  Each “lesson” was 10 minutes and in the lessons teachers explained to parents how their subject was taught, what was expected in the syllabuses, what was expected of students in the subject and how parents may help in their children’s work at home.  Parents were also able to “experience” how students move from one lesson to another during the 5-minute period changing time.

Many parents showed their appreciation to the school which particularly organized this event and provide opportunities for them to learn of how and what their children had been experiencing at school in the first couple of weeks of the school term.  They had nice and positive comments about the school and how teachers have been working with their children.  Except for a few incidents where parents could not find the correct classrooms, or that two teachers were assigned the same classroom in the first evening, the event ran smoothly.  In both evenings, parents left the school at about 8:45pm in confidence knowing that their children have been put in safe hands of dedicated teachers.
