Chinese Writing Enhancement Programme

To further develop and strengthen the Chinese language ability and interest of students who are talented in Chinese, a tailor-made Chinese Writing Enhancement Programme has been introduced by the Chinese teachers. The programme started in March and consists of interesting and inspiring lessons on a variety of topics about Chinese creative writing, which are conducted every alternate Friday after school. The Languages Department also encourages students to join different kinds of Chinese creative writing activities outside school and make arrangements for them.

 

 Chinese Creative Writing Talk 

 

 On 25th March, 26 students attended a fruitful and inspiring Chinese creative writing talk organized by Lingnan University. The speaker of the talk – Su Tong (蘇童) – is one of the most famous Chinese writers in Mainland China. In the talk, Su Tong shared his ideas and experiences about the attitude of a writer in society and how the writer should react to and reflect on social issues though literature. The students enjoyed the talk a great deal and learned so much. As a follow-up activity, a teacher from the YMCA of Hong Kong Christian College also conducted a session to further explain and share the ideas about creative writing.

 

Chinese Movie Appreciation Sharing Session

 

 On 16th April, Ms. Kit Ho, an experienced professional in the film industry, was invited to share her experience and knowledge about movie appreciation with YHKCC students. Ms. Kit Ho worked in one of the big cinema circuits as an Assistant Manager for over ten years. 30 students joined the sharing session. Through Ms. Ho’s interesting sharing and the interactive Q & A session, the students learned a lot about the film industry and different ways to appreciate and analyze movies. They all enjoyed the talk and were very interested in finding out about things that they would not be likely to learn in their normal daily lives.

 

‘Talk to the Writers’

 

On 26th April, 23 students participated a talk titled ‘Talk to the Writers”, which is part of the City Literary Festival organized by the City University of Hong Kong. 7 writers – BaiDao (北島), ChenZhiShan (陳子善), ZhengChouYu (鄭愁予), YanLianKe (閻連科), LiLi (李黎), Zijin (季進), LiRui (李銳) were invited to share their views and opinions about Chinese Creative Writing and Literature Appreciation to the teenagers. The writers are all very important writers in Asia. It was definitely a very meaningful experience for students and helped them to broaden their horizons in learning Chinese.
