YHKCC Debating Teams won the biggest English language competition

Congratulations! The YHKCC Debating Teams won in Hong Kong’s biggest English language competition in late September. We have three teams joining the “Hong Kong Secondary Schools Debating Competition”.

Our middle team led out with a win against STFA Yung Yau College, Yuen Long. Team members for the round were Andika Rukma, Ali Imran and Enrique Ponce, who  are all F.4 students..

We followed this up with our senior team winning against STFA Leung Kau Kui College Senior Team from Tuen Mun, a school we hosted a debate in our school previously. Our seniors, composing of all F.5 students debating for their very first time, were Miko Taike, Alisha Nalbo and Emma Aston.

Introducing the motion that “Large social media companies make unfair use of users’ personal information”, Miko said the issue was one of the most important and challenging issues of the early twenty-first century. Andika from the Middle team might have started with the same words but his team argued  the opposite side of the motion!

Top marks have gone  to our debaters as they were clearly able to see and probe both sides of the question.

The senior debate was adjudicated by Mr Stephen Cooley, Regional NET Co-ordinator from the Education Bureau. He praised the students’ research and citing of references as one determinate of the win. He noted, nevertheless, that we still have some way to go – to be truly persuasive in argument.

Please join me in congratulating the team!
