Science Week (25th to 29th May)
Biology, Chemistry and Physics activities were held during the Science Week from 25th to 29th May.
Biology Activities:
Lunch time: Sea Monkey Observation and Yeast Experiment
During lunch time, our students were introduced a marine animal called Sea Monkeys. Sea Monkeys belong to a genus of aquatic crustaceans called Artemia (brine shrimp). Students observed the external features of sea monkeys at a larger magnification using microscopes. They were intrigued by the leaf-like appendages of the tiny animals and were inspired to take further enquiry of their life cycle and habitat. In addition, some yeast experiments were carried out to demonstrate respiration in microorganisms.
After School: Rat Dissection Workshop
Last Wednesday Rat Dissection workshop was a success with both junior form and senior form students jam-packed the Biology Lab. Students were introduced the concept of dissection, in which animals were exposed through incisions and internal structures were examined. Under teachers’ and lab technician’s supervision, students carefully dissected the rats and observed various internal organs. On top of learning dissection skills, students also took the opportunity to learn various anatomical terminologies in the workshop.
Chemistry Activities:
Chemistry Experiments
There were 3 interesting Chemistry experiments done after school on 26th May. First, we had the ‘Fire Mountains’. Different metal salts were placed on the mountains prepared by alcohol and burned with different colors. Students also made edible water bubbles and even strings. Furthermore, students made their own lip balm by using crayons and various favourings, Vaseline and coconut oil. They enjoyed it very much and their masterpieces were good enough for sale.
Chemistry debate
On 29th May, we had an exciting debate on a controversial topic ‘Technology makes people connected easier, making the world a better one as a whole.’ After fierce debating, attacking and counter-attacking, finally, the affirmation team got the championship and Enrique Ponce (4M) was awarded the best debater.
Physics Activities:
Water Rocket Competition
On 27th May, around fifteen teams of students joined the water rocket competition during lunch time at the grass field. Each team constructed a water rocket using a plastic bottle with the maximum size of a 1.25L plastic bottle. All the designs were excellent and some could even fly up to the balcony or across the field!

Robot Demonstration
On 28th May, a group of senior form Physics students demonstrated the robots they had built to other fellow students in the cover playground during lunch time. They explained to the students how they had used different electronic and mechanical components to build the robots and how they had written the corresponding programmes to control the movements of the robots. Students got the chance to remote control the robots to complete different tasks.
A lot of students participated in the activity. They all enjoyed it and had great interest in Robotics and the related science. They went away with better knowledge about the mechanism of robotics.
