Enrichment Week - F.1 Music Programme

From 2nd to 7th July, a selective group of Form 1 students had a fruitful Music Enrichment Week. It aimed at equipping students with skills in music appreciation, composing and performing. The participants were like a fusion of music students and journalists, who documented all their experiences and interviews with musicians in a specially designed journal booklet.

The programme was kick-started by morning lectures in World Music. These prepared the students for a trip to the Music Department of the University of Hong Kong. Students explored on the precious set of Balinese Gamelan instruments, led by Dr. Deborah Waugh, a specialist in this area. They were also introduced to several rare historical instrumental collections, the Music library and studio. The trip was completed with a campus tour.

On Day 2, there was intensive performance training, including keyboard, vocal and djembe workshops taught by the YHKCC Music staff.  In the afternoon, a group of professional musicians from the Hong KongChinese Orchestra taught the students how to play the guzheng, dizi, erhu and Chinese percussion. At the end, the musicians and the students performed ‘Command of the General’ together.

On Day 3, students formed in groups to design their music programme for a ‘Music Battle’, which was an inter-team competition with the  purpose to put all their skills learned in the week into practice. They had more training in performance and guidance in composing their group songs. In the afternoon, the students were excited by a trio of acoustic and electric guitarists who simply rocked the studios!

On the last day, the students rehearsed hard for the Music Battle and performed music which amazed the audience and adjudicators. The week ended with a feast which was kindly prepared by all the participants and their families.

A big thank you to all the staff and students’ families who supported the event!
