The Watoto Children’s Choir from Africa was held successfully on 18thNovember. The sound of the African drums vibrated beautifully and the Watoto Children’s Choir sang and danced enthusiastically in the school hall in their brilliant Ugandan costumes with radiant smiles on their faces.
The Choir also performed a 90-minute enthusiastic show at 7:30 pm in the school hall and it attracted an audience of over 500, including parents, friends, Church members , students and families from Tung Chung. The concert was fueled with lots of energy, uplifting music, vibrant dance, life-transforming stories and original African music which thrilled and dazzled the audience to sing and sway along with the beat.
After the concert, all could also enjoy shopping in the fair trade counter of Watoto with items such as accessories and handicrafts, CDs, watches and T-shirts, etc.
The Watoto Children’s Choir has travelled internationally since 1994 as advocates for the estimated 50 million children in Africa, orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS, war, poverty and disease. Accompanied by a team of adults, the choir presents Watoto’s vision and mission through their stories, music and dance. Watoto choirs act as ambassadors to raise awareness about the plight of the orphaned and vulnerable children in Africa.
The Choir first performed in the school assembly in the afternoon with a blend of soulful African rhythm, contemporary gospel and ethnic dance. It reached the climax when some YHKCC students were invited on stage to dance with the members of the Choir.
A Casual Dress Day was also held on 20th November to provide an opportunity for all students to help support the children in Uganda. Each participant in the Casual Day was asked to donate a minimum of HK$10. The entire school community demonstrated their enthusiasm and expressed love. With the generous support from all, the Casual Dress Day raised over HK$16,000, and all proceeds will go to Watoto.
