Arts Week
An Arts Week was held from 25th May to 27th May to introduce different types of activities.
Visual Arts
As part of the Arts Week, the Art Department responded to Roman Ondak’s artwork “Measuring the Universe” with our own piece “Measuring YHKCC”.
“Measuring the Universe” - Ondak’s piece begins as an empty white room. The space begins to fill when workers mark visitors' height along with their name and the current date. The only items required for the installation were a white room and a few black markers. What began as a white space was filled with letters, lines and numbers as people passed through the environment. Each tiny line represents a different person. The thousands and thousands of lines show many people passed by , how many people were affected by this installation.
In creating the art piece “Measuring YHKCC”, students are able to contribute and collaborate to the piece of art. Each individual name and height is vital in making the art piece as a whole. Over the course of the week students re-visited the piece to search for their name. This piece promotes ideas of the small part that we each play in a bigger whole) and can prompt discussion on , collaboration and unity.
We hope that students can add their names again the following year, this time in a different colour, and that the YHKCC Primary school students can also participate when they come to the school for the musical on 6th July. Some students will be able to see their physical growth but many may also reflect on their emotional, spiritual and educational growth over the year.
Badge Making
We brought out our button making machine for the first time, supplied the students with a wide selection of felt pens and asked them to design a series of badges. It was great to see the quality of the productions getting better and better as the week progressed.
Music Programme
As part of the Arts Week with the theme of Latin American culture, the Music Department organised the Latin Music & Dance Fiesta. On 25th May, the Latin Dance workshop was kick-started with demonstration by experienced dancers from our school. While watching the dance performances, participants enjoyed homemade fruit punch. This was followed by learning the basics of Cha-Cha. The participants were excited to try out the dance steps. The event concluded by a final dance accompanied by live Latin percussion.
On 26th May, the Fiesta continued with a workshop in Latin percussion instruments. After demonstration by Mr Edgar, participants learned to play the rhythmic patterns on djembes and Latin percussion, such as timbale. With the assistance of the Beat Club, the workshop was filled with active drumming beats and laughter in the air.
Heartfelt thanks to the support of the student helpers and staff to make the event a great success.
Home Economics - Latin American cuisine
We were delighted that so many participated and enjoyed the first ever YHKCC Arts Week. In Home Economics, students joined in to create yummy and authentic quesadillas, celebrating Latin American cuisine. Special thanks goes to Ms. Verena Mooser, the Spanish teacher who is skillful in cooking. We look forward to more exciting events and plenty of food tasting next year.
