Visit to HKU School of Biomedical Sciences

On 15th June, about 40 students from Form 4 Biology and Chemistry students visited HKU School of Biomedical Sciences.

First of all, all the students were led into a mini assembly room where two professors gave a briefing on the courses and admissions of the school. After that, students were split into groups and led to different locations. One group was first brought to a laboratory where two professors let us look into microscopes and then use equipment to run 'size-exclusion chromatography (SEC)' and 'colour spectroscopy'.  The experiments allowed students to detect specific dyes or pigments in different liquid fractions by using light. It was extremely fascinating as how only light and wavelength can find out the exact pigment in a liquid fraction.

Lastly, students were given a tour by a PhD student of one of the floors. There were a lot of advanced equipment and strange rooms. There were two rooms kept at 4 degrees and 37 degrees respectively. The functions of the rooms are to stop and enhance the growth of bacteria respectively. There was also a dark room to perform experiments and refrigerators kept at -80 degrees. Many students were working there.

In short, , it was an amazing tour to give students an eye-opening experience.  The people there were also very friendly and hospitable. We all look forward to having more opportunities to visit more universities or attend seminars offered by  universities to gain more exposure and widen our horizons.
