Liberal Studies Week from 27th to 31st March

The Liberal Studies week was held from 27th to 31st March during lunch period and four activities were conducted in the week. Students from different forms organized the activities with the help from their LS teachers. Activities are as follows:

Day 1 & Day 2: Current Issue Bulletin Board

The F.2 LS classes prepared display boards with the current issue of “Food Trucks in Hong Kong” and exhibited them in the Covered Playground. The aims of the exhibition were to arouse students’ awareness of the issue  in Hong Kong and provided a platform for students to voice their opinions. More issues will be introduced and displayed in the Covered Playground on a regular basis.

Day 3: F.1 Video Appreciation

F.1 video competition was a new practice under this year’s junior LS curriculum. Students were encouraged to apply what they have learnt in class regarding drug abuse in producing a video. The competition has created an in-depth reflection among students towards the negative impacts of drug abuse. Apart from the showcased videos, there were other good videos. We hope that we can keep the activity every year to inspire more students on linking up the school curriculum with their daily lives.

Day 4: Quiz Game

On 31st Mar, three F.5 DSE classes prepared different booths to test students' knowledge and understanding of local and global issues. Questions ranging from the Chief Executive election to the sweatshop phenomenon were asked. Students found it fruitful to have a better understanding about the current issues after the activity.

Day 5: Liberal Studies Carnival

F.4 classes organized a Liberal Studies carnival to raise the social awareness of local and global issues, namely stereotyping, racism, recycle, anti-suicide, global warming and selfimage. Each F.4 class prepared different interesting game booths to seize students’ attention and interact with students to spread messages regarding the designated issues.

The LS week was a great success to arouse the interest of students regarding the current issues in Hong Kong and around the world. Students would like to share their reflection as follows:

“LS week was really fun to me and to a lot of other students. I enjoyed the LS carnival the most as our class’s booth had a good presentation on self-image. Besides, I learnt a lot of different issues around the world and I'm more aware of these problems. I really enjoyed the games and the free food that was provided for as prizes. I  hope we do this again next year.."(Marissa Kariyawasam, 4A)

“Our booth was called ‘Hoops’. We tried to educate students to establish a habit to recycle and hence to become more environmentally friendly, Therefore, we can have  a greener, cleaner school and help save the world.” (Kylie Beaver, 4H)

“The 4K booth was on anti-suicide. This is a concern that has hit Hong Kong recently, as 25 students have committed suicide from the beginning of 2017. Our booth aimed to address the problem of student suicide through how to provide assistance to prevent suicides. The booth provided us the opportunity to learn about the epidemic and analyze how the local educational system is affecting the mental health of students.” (Laura Johnson, 4K)
