"Care and Concern Concert" for the Elderly
On 31st March, 20 elderly visited YHKCC for a music concert and workshop, which was hosted by the Music Department and coordinated with the school social workers from The Neighbourhood Advice-Action Council. This event was initiated under the Hong Kong government Music Office ‘School Care Subsidy Scheme’, which aims to encourage school music groups to serve the community through music performance. Since 2009, over 230 music groups had performed to over 21,000 underprivileged at venues such as hospitals, elderly and sheltered homes. This year, we were honoured to be one of the 37 schools to join the scheme.
After having lunch together, our students started with Chinese Instrumental Ensemble, performing two traditional numbers, ‘Happiness’ (喜洋洋) and ‘Nan Er Dang Zi Qiang’ (男兒當自強). This was followed by the Orchestra performing ‘What a Wonderful World’ and ‘Best of Queen’, a medley of songs by the legendary band. Joshua Dembina (2Y) performed a solo piece on the guzheng (豐收鑼鼓) whereas Roy Ho (5Y) sang a Cantonese oldie with his sister (你回來吧). The dramatic and humorous performance brought smiles on our visitors’ faces.
The last part of the concert was performed by the Beat Club on djembe, with two classic songs ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’ and ‘The Moon Represents My Heart’ (月亮代表我的心). Then, Mr Edgar Caole led a djembe workshop. The visitors enjoyed the interactions with our Beat Club members, and learned basic rhythmic patterns. Finally, the visitors jammed with the students in the finale.
We look forward to further reaching out to the community with music in the near future.
