Arts Week
This year Arts Week was held from 22nd to 26th May and it took inspiration from the diverse and bountiful cultures of Asia. Students had opportunities to take part in a range of activities across Music, Art and Home Economics experiencing the captivating sounds, colours, patterns and tastes of Asia.
The Music Department hosted a Pop Listening and Karaoke Challenge with music from China, Japan and Korea. The objectives were to introduce students to the pop music culture of East Asian countries and to enjoy singing foreign language karaoke songs together. Students signed up in groups and displayed their singing ability as well as their memory of lyrics. They also enjoyed sharing some local Chinese, Japanese and Korean snacks. The winning groups won earphones rewarding their passion for listening to music.
Art students led a Mehndi (henna “tattoo”) demonstration. There was a display of the history, methods and ideas behind Mehndi as well as the opportunity for students to have a design drawn on their hands. There was also a ceramic workshop in the Art Department after school where students created ceramic plates inspired by the traditional designs of Japan and China. Students learned about the Japanese ink painting style “Sumi-e” and created their own beautiful ceramic dishes.
The week ended with a sushi making class in the Home Economics room. Students learned how to make traditional Japanese Maki and Nigiri sushi and then adapted and created their own versions using a variety of ingredients. Finally students got to enjoy the delicious food they had made.
We would like to give rounds of applause to the students who led or organised activities for their dedication and all participants as well as guest teachers who challenged themselves in the music games and sang their hearts out.
