Results of the 14th Putonghua Speech Competition for Non-Chinese Speaking Students (Secondary School Division)

The 14th Putonghua Speech Competition for Non-Chinese Speaking Students was successfully held from March to May 2026, with 10 schools and 42 entries registering and participating in the competition.

For the past few years, the competition has adopted the format of online submission of Chinese speech videos. Despite the physical distance, the outstanding performances of the students fully demonstrated their enthusiasm for learning Putonghua and appreciating Chinese language and culture. We hope that this competition will continue to provide a meaningful platform for non-Chinese speaking students in Hong Kong to enhance their interest, confidence and passion for Chinese learning.

This year, we are honored to have mLang Limited, the College of Chinese Language and Literature of South China Normal University, and the National Language Promotion Base of South China Normal University as co-organizers of the competition. With their generous support and professional guidance, we believe our students have benefited greatly from this valuable learning experience.

An exciting new element has also been introduced this year: the competition will make use of generative AI technology to recreate the voices and images of ancient Chinese poets, such as Li Bai and Su Shi. Winning students may have the opportunity to participate in a creative “cross-time recitation” video with AI-generated ancient poets, presenting a dialogue between the past and the present. This innovative approach aims to show how technology can enrich students’ experience of learning traditional Chinese culture.
