Overview

Whole School Reading Programme

The Whole School Reading Programme is designed to cultivate a love for reading, enhance academic skills and promote wellbeing among our students.

At the YHKCC, we believe in the transformative power of reading. Reading opens doors to new worlds, sparks the imagination, and fosters a sense of ‘flow’ – that magical state where individuals are fully immersed and engaged in an activity. By encouraging students to read, we aim to inspire a love for learning, creativity and exploration. Reading not only enhances academic performance but also nurtures empathy, critical thinking and emotional wellbeing.

We aim to cultivate active readers through engaging activities like D.E.A.R. sessions on Wednesday mornings and Shared Shelf gatherings on Thursdays, encouraging students to immerse themselves in reading and share bookish discussions. Notable activities include teacher and student book recommendations in devotion videos, vibrant World Book Day celebrations with themed dress-up days, and inter-school initiatives such as book report competitions and joint book visits, fostering collaboration and literary exploration. Additionally, we promote sustainability through initiatives like hosting a sustainable book fair, partnering with second-hand bookstores and advocating for eco-friendly reading practices that benefit both the environment and our reading community.

Join us in celebrating the joy of reading and discovering the magic that lies within the pages of a book. Let’s embark on a literary journey together, where every word read is a step towards a brighter, more informed future.
